| Day 14 Kenicott to Thompson Pass (5/27)
The lodge took us to the airstrip and we flew back to Chitina. The sky was partially cloudy with lots of sun peeking through. The flight was good except when we went through some snow, but that only lasted about 30 seconds. We were soon reunited with our trusty rent-a-car and were on our way to Thompson Pass Chalet. Another perfect day, several more glaciers, lots of pictures. There's still alot of snow on the ground. One of the reasons we wanted to head toward Valdez was the reputation of the beautiful drive. We made quite a few scenic stops. We had lunch, our usual peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, at a small park up in the pass. The chalet is just beyond the pass, about 19 miles from Valdez. The chalet is quite unique. It has a generator for power which may change soon if the power poles come down the street. We enjoyed talking with our hosts who are environmentalists. They shared their knowledge of the area and answered our questions about the 89 oil spill and its effects on Prince William Sound. We liked the peaceful setting. |
